Let’s face it: going through any home renovation project can be a little taxing. The dust, noise and disruption can really throw your day off-track.
When it comes to the installation of new windows, there are a few steps that you can take to make it a little easier on you and the installation crew.
First, shop around before you secure the window manufacturer and retailer that you’d like to work with. Ask friends, family and neighbours for recommendations, and cross-check against online reviews.
Once you’ve found the company you’d like to work with, follow these seven steps to make your window install day run smoothly.
1. Take Down Window Dressings
Remove any window dressings that you have hanging— like blinds, curtains, and sheers. Make sure you detach any curtain rods or tension poles which may obstruct the install team, too.
2. Clear the Way
Make sure there’s nothing in the way both outside — like planters or patio seating — as well as inside, like rugs, furniture, or kids’ toys. Remove any decor from your current windows, like stained glass ornaments and anti-collision decals for birds.
3. Don’t Forget the Hardware
If the window installation is in a tight space, you may need to remove doors from doorjambs. Take measurements and prepare in advance if this is the case.
4. Protect Your Floors
Take your time and protect your floors. This could be as simple as putting down tarps, or you could invest in shift-free and sticky plastic floor covering. Either of these methods will protect your flooring not only from dust but also from bumps and scratches.
5. Clear Your Driveway
Make sure the install team has easy access to your home. You don’t want them lugging your shiny new windows from several blocks over. This might mean moving a vehicle from your driveway or that you need to temporarily blocking off a space on the street (give your neighbours notice if you plan on doing this).
6. Make Clean-Up a Breeze
Depending on the scope of your window installation — if you’re getting one or every room done — it might be worth the time and effort to cover furniture (like dressers and beds) with dust sheets or tarps. Sitting dust particles can be nasty for your family over time. Remove items that are sensitive to dust and put them in a secure space —like speakers, other tech items and smaller pets (like fish tanks and hamster runs).
7. Make Accommodations for Pets
Speaking of pets … if you’re getting multiple windows redone, the chances are your front door will be left ajar, and crews of people will be coming-and-going throughout the day. To save yourself the worry, set your cat up in a quiet room away from the chaos. Be sure to leave a litter tray and water. Follow a similar protocol for dogs but ensure they’re let out occasionally. Better still, see if a friend or neighbour can watch them.
