Mattresses are one of the most important things, whether at home or in a hospital, but they gather dirt that could cause health problems to you over time.

However, using these tips, you can effectively clean your mattress to remove dirt and bacteria.

Clean

After a long time of using your mattress, it gathers a lot of dirt and grime from your body oil, sweat, perfume, and dust.

Cleaning helps remove physical dirt, grime, and stains from the mattress. To start the cleaning process, use warm water, which is around 40 degrees C, and a detergent. However, sometimes your mattress could have stains that could be hard to remove.

To clean mattress stains, you also need a vacuum cleaner that has an upholstery attachment, cleaning clothes, vinegar, and baking soda.

First, you need to clean the mattress covers with soapy water using the correct and diluted cleaning solutions.

Dilute the solutions according to the instructions of the manufacturer. That ensures that it removes the stain but does not destroy the fabric.

To clean the stains from the mattress:

  1. Spread distilled white vinegar over the stain.
  2. Ensure that the stain is fully soaked in the vinegar, then sprinkle baking soda on the vinegar.
  3. Let the vinegar and the baking soda sit for a few minutes, then scrub them off using your cleaning cloths.

However, if the stain does not come off, pour on some more vinegar and baking soda and let them sit for the night.

The following day, clean out the mixture and use the vacuum cleaner to suck out all the baking soda from the mattress.

An alternative way to remove small stains on mattresses is by mixing baking soda, salt, and water then spraying it on the stain.

Apart from removing stains, you can use baking soda to eliminate odor from your mattress.

All you have to do is spread the baking soda on your bed and expose it to sunlight and fresh air. That also helps kill all the mold and bacteria.

To deep clean the mattress, use the vacuum cleaner with the attachment and get into all the corners of the mattress to remove all the dust.

If you are dealing with urine stains on your mattress, use a mixture of hydrogen peroxide, soap, and salt. For effective results, you need to always perform checks on the mattress and clean it regularly.

Disinfect

Disinfecting your mattress means using chemicals to kill bacteria on your mattress. You can use a disinfectant like a mild chlorine solution on the mattress and give it a few minutes to kill the bacteria.

You should then use hot air to dry the mattress. If you are disinfecting a mattress cover, you can also use a hot washing machine, where you pass the mattress cover through one cycle.

Sterilize

This acts like deep disinfecting. It is where you use chemicals or heat to eliminate all the microbes that could be present in your mattress, both good and bad. That helps eliminate all the germs and bacteria that the disinfection process would have missed.

To keep your mattress from all the dirt and stains, you should try using a mattress protector. Whenever anything spills on the mattress, it does not get to the mattress, but the protector, which means you only have to clean the protector, and your bed remains brand new for a long time.
