Living in a one-bedroom apartment is convenient and practical. Without a roommate, you can pretty much do anything you want with your apartment and decide on your own. You can remodel, design, and redesign your apartment to your heart’s content!

Most one-bedroom apartments, however, have limited space. You should carefully consider your decors relative to the space you have. If you want a bed bigger than a full-size bed, you may want to reconsider that to accommodate a few more items in your bedroom.

10 Design and Decor Tips for One-Bedroom Apartments

Here are some décor ideas for your one-bedroom apartment:

1. Choose low profile furniture.

If you have limited space, choosing bulky furniture will only make your living space look smaller. A low sitting couch would give an illusion of a high ceiling and taller windows. Although you still have limited space, your place will be virtually more spacious.

2. Designate extra space for your lifestyle.

You may want to think about what a happy home is for you with the limited space you have. If you love cooking or inviting friends over for dinner, you may want to sacrifice some living room and allot more space for the kitchen and dining area.

In the same way, if you love hanging out and watching movies, you can allocate more space for your couch or a few bean bags.

3. Install open shelf dividers.

Dividers tend to add more clutter to your place. If you must use a divider to separate different living spaces in your one-bedroom apartment, open shelf dividers are a good way to go. Since you can peek through what’s behind it, it won’t make your space feel cramped up.

4. Decorate your wall with mirrors.

Using mirrors to decorate your wall is a classic approach to create more visual space. If you are not sure about what you want yet, you can never go wrong with this.

5. Use glass doors and dividers.

Aside from mirrors, another way to create open space is by using glass doors and dividers. Since you can see thru glass, your place would not feel cramped up with your limited space.

6. Take advantage of sliding hardware.

Limited space may mean you won’t have that much space when you open your kitchen cabinet doors. Doors also disable a few feet of living space behind it. To maximize your living space, you can make use of sliding door hardware.

7. Make a loft.

To create more space, you can convert your regular one-bedroom apartment to a one-bedroom loft apartment. Although the stairs leading to your upper deck will consume space, you will have a separate space upstairs for your bed, study, or whatever you want to put there.

8. Take advantage of the vanishing bed mechanism.

If you can just get rid of your bed in the morning, that would give you more space during the day. With a Murphy Bed mechanism, this is possible. This mechanism allows you to stow your bed vertically and disguise it as a cabinet. Cool right?

However, the Murphy Bed mechanism is quite costly. Although, if you are in dire need of space, it basically makes your bed vanish when not in use.

9. Use an extendable table.

A one-bedroom apartment is not designed to house a lot of people. But sometimes, guests pop in at home, and there’s no place to dine. A table that can be extended is a good idea since your space won’t allow a long table.

You can simply extend your table to accommodate a few more people and revert when they leave, so you still get enough space to move around in the dining area when you have no guests around.

10. Don’t skimp on lighting.

Light matters a lot when designing your apartment. A well-lit space would look larger and less cramped up compared to a dim room. Hanging and wall-mounted lamps would not take floor space, and it is a good idea to light up your place.

Conclusion

With the limited space you have, it may seem impossible to furnish your one-bedroom apartment with all the basic stuff you need for a cozy home. It may seem difficult, but with proper planning, you can have the coziest one-bedroom apartment.
